Thomas Crooks started his martial arts training under Peter Williams in 1992 at his dojo in Epping, Sydney.
He is very fortunate to be a direct student of the Sosuishi-ryu Jujutsu 16th Headmaster, Shitama Manzo Sensei, Dai Shihan. Sosuishi-ryu Jujutsu is a 370 year old familial jujutsu ryuha, founded in 1650. In October 2016 he and Peter Williams were appointed as representatives of the Sosuishi-ryu Jujutsu Kai in Australia.
They established Kumataka Dojos in 2017, where judo, jujutsu and Okinawan karate are taught. Thomas holds the teaching title of Kyoshi in Sosuishi-ryu Jujutsu, conferred on him by Shitama Manzo Sensei in 2018.
He opened his own dojo in Bayswater, Perth, WA in 2016. Along with Peter Williams, he leads ongoing training visits to Japan. Trained as an acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist, Thomas worked in private practice for just under 10 years.
More recently he moved into academia and is the Senior Lecturer in Social Sciences at Endeavour College of Natural Health in Perth.
In this episode of the Caveman Condition Podcast, Thomas speaks to us about the history of Jujutsu and how it was created, why he fell in love with the martial artform, and how genomics and alternative medicine play a role in our everyday lives.
